As reported yesterday, the United States Supreme Court will hear a case on laws to limit funeral pickets by anti-gay extremist Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church. Kansas Attorney General Steve Six wants to intervene in opposition to Phelps.

In related news, Danbury, Conn., is dealing with a protest by Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church over a local production of The Laramie Project.

Kansas City is now home to a Hamburger Mary’s, a gay burger chain that originated in San Francisco.

Colorado’s LGBT Center will honor local lawyer Denise Maes as “Barrister of the Year” at its 13th Annual Jokers, Jewels & Justice reception. President Obama appointed Maes general counsel for the White House Office of Administration.

Also in Colorado, Catholic archbishop of Denver Charles Chaput is defending a local Catholic school’s decision to bar an elementary student from attending because the student’s parents are lesbians.

The Oklahoma legislature is considering laws to combat the state’s high divorce rate. One proposal would mandate counselling before a marriage or divorce. Some conservative lawmakers oppose the proposal, saying it’s government involvement in a private matter. Critics claim these lawmakers are hypocrites for supporting state involvement in abortion and same-sex marriage.
